Behind the wheel

Pilatus approach roads. The route up from Kriens toward Pilatus climbs quickly through tight bends, a good match for a car with sharper steering than a standard rental. Parking near the lower cable car station fills early on clear mornings, so a timed start matters more than the drive itself.

Rigi via Weggis or Vitznau. Two lakeside villages feed the road up to Rigi, each with a different rhythm of switchbacks and short straights. Traffic is lighter on the Vitznau side outside midday, which suits a longer, unhurried drive rather than a rushed loop.

Engelberg valley run. The road into Engelberg follows a narrowing valley with steady gradients rather than sharp hairpins, better suited to grand tourers than tight sports cars. Village parking is limited in ski season, so arrival timing outside peak hours is worth planning.

Gotthard Pass, old road. The historic Gotthard route is one of the more demanding drives near Lucerne, with cobbled sections and continuous hairpins on the northern ramp. It closes with snow, so a winter-tyred or all-wheel-drive vehicle is the more practical choice outside summer.

Lakeside villages: Küssnacht to Vitznau. A slower, waterfront alternative to the mountain routes, this stretch runs close to Lake Lucerne with wide views and gentler curves. It works well as a shorter outing, with regular pull-offs for photographs rather than a single dedicated viewpoint.
